Date: Wednesday, July 18

Venue: The Eight Track (334 Classroom)

Participation: Individual event

Event Description: Can you walk the walk--and do it with a sense of poise, drama, and of course, balance! Here's your chance to demonstrate your ability to master the beam with grace and precision. Athletes will walk a balance beam, performing their own routines, while holding or balancing at least one book.

To Register: Send your name and the name of this event to the IOOC Coordinator before 10 a.m. of the day of this event. Walk-ons also welcome. Note: Participation in the Games provides tacit permission for the future use of any photographs or videos.

Rules:

1. The balance beam will be taped on the floor and will be the exact width and length of a regulation Olympic-size balance beam. Music will be provided.

2. Each athlete will perform a 1-minute routine that emphasizes grace, drama and balance incorporating at least one book in the routine.

Scoring [see scoring rubric below]:

1. Athletes will earn points by successfully executing difficult elements, leaps, and jumps.  They may increase their scores by linking several elements together.  Suggested elements include but are not limited to:  360-degree turns, 180-degree leg splits, forward and backward acrobatic skills, leaps.

2. Deductions will be taken for all errors, including but not limited to:  lapses in control, balance checks (wobbling), poor technique and execution, failure to control the book(s).  Falls automatically incur a deduction but athletes are expected to remount and continue their routines within 10 seconds of falling.

3. Points will be awarded by the judges for style, grace and drama.

4. Extra points will be awarded for using more than one manual in a routine.

Note: No special attire is required and the routine may be performed with or without shoes on.
